Tamshiyacu – Sister Church of First Presbyterian, Jefferson City, MO and Middle Octorara Presbyterian, Quarryville, PA

!cid_image001_jpg@01D0C605 - 1.jpgOur 2015 Peru Crew shared the love of God with the people of the Amazon Rainforest in word and action from June 12 through June 26. This was the 13th consecutive year that members of our congregation, under the leadership of Pastor Dave Henry, have traveled to the Peruvian Amazon as missionaries for Jesus Christ. Again this year we spent time with our sister church in Tamshiyacu where  we completed a construction project (painting Sunday School rooms and repairing screens, doors, windows and locks), held a Bible School for over 150 children, visited and played with the special needs children of the SCOTA Schools in Tamshiyacu and Nauta, worshipped and fellowshipped and sang and played with the folks of Iquitos and Tamshiyacu, Peru. This year the Peru Crew, consisting of George Burson, Dan Carr, Jennifer Hickman, Josh Hickman, Meredith Manda, Pastor Dave Henry and two members of the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (Quarryville, PA) Dan and Boni Henry, also distributed 35 water filtration systems in Tamshiyacu and Santa Maria, purchased medical supplies through Nurse Margarita Diaz for the hospitals in Iquitos and Tamshiyacu, and distributed school supplies, shoes and other gifts to the children. During our first week we stayed overnight one night in Tamshiyacu to experience a “night in the jungle”.  During our second week we also visited a home for AIDS/HIV patients and a hospital in Iquitos, joined in a prayer meeting at the Presbyterian Church in Iquitos, visited in homes in Tamshiyacu and Iquitos and spent time with our Peruvian friends on the Boulevard, supporting the work of young Peruvian boys and girls making and selling native crafts.  It was an amazing adventure and YOU are invited to contact Pastor Dave to join us on our 2016 Peru Mission Trip!

Testimony from 2015 Peru Crew members:

“It is so hard for me to explain in words what the short week in Peru has meant to me.  I developed a love for a country which I still know little about and cannot speak the language.  I appreciate so much more the relationship between our church and the church in Tamshiyacu.  I now feel a responsibility for that small yellow church in the Amazon.  A responsibility to help them succeed in any way I can.”    -  Jennifer Hickman

“This year I got a chance to travel to Peru.  The trip gave me a larger outlook on life.  I look at the children here and see them so happy, and I look at their parents and see them struggling to provide.  This reminds me of Ecclesiastes 1:8, ‘For in much wisdom is much vexation and those who increase in knowledge increase sorrow.’  Life in Peru makes me upset as I see so many needs but it also gives me hope – a hope for a better future for the people     -   Josh Hickman

!cid_image004_jpg@01D0C605 -2.jpg “In Peru we taught Bible School, assembled and delivered water filtration systems, painted rooms in a Sunday School, sorted and delivered school supplies, bought electronics for the church in Tamshiyacu and handed out hundreds of pairs of flip-flops (to protect children’s feet from parasites).  It was a wonderful ride filled with natural beauty, caring people and a whole new world’s worth of perspective on life here at home and around the world              - George Burson

“There is something indescribably amazing watching as over 100 kids gather outside a church, waiting to get inside when the day’s Bible School isn’t scheduled to begin for another hour.  Yet the children from all over Tamshiyacu, Peru were already present, excited for the event to start.  In an hour these kids would sing songs while sitting on pews built by previous First Presbyterian mission groups; they would do crafts at tables built by past First Presbyterian mission teams, and while the Bible School was happening some of our crew continued painting the rooms of the church and cleaning it so that these children may have a nice place to learn about God.  It is hard to put into words what I experienced during that week in Peru, but seeing all those kids eagerly anticipating entering a church that exists in large [art because of First Presbyterian Church’s support was incredible.”
– Dan Carr

Water is life.

The World Health Organization states that every year more than 3.4 million people die as a result of water related diseases, making it a leading cause of death around the world. The vast majority of water-borne illnesses are caused by organisms that are found in a water source that has been contaminated by sewage.  The residents of Tamshiyacu live in a remote village along the Amazon River. Their main water source is the Amazon River, which is contaminated by many parasites. The need for clean drinking water is a drastic need!

Jesus Christ is the living water! John 7:37 says “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and let the one who believes in me drink." As the scripture has said, "Out of the believer's heart shall flow streams of living water.”

Medical Mission, INC and the Amazon Mission Fellowship are working to provide primary medical care, water purifying systems, public health education, and spiritual inspiration to our Peruvian brothers and sisters. Together, we can make an immeasurable impact in the daily lives of our neighbors in Tamshiyacu, Peru.

From your family for their family: You have the opportunity to purchase a water-purifying system for a Peruvian family as a symbol of Christ's compassion.  The cost of one water bucket filtration system which can provide clean drinking water for a family is only $51!

In Christ’s Service  - Dave Henry
